I decided to do a top 16 for 2016, and wow was it difficult to choose only 16! It's been a great year and I had the pleasure of meeting some incredible new families, which warms my heart in such a big way. I absolutely loved exploring with little ones over the fall and letting them lead the way. There is nothing much more beautiful than a child exploring creation. I also had such a blast with some senior girls this year. So fun!
Here in North Dakota, we are under a deep blanket of snow and we are experiencing alternating days of tolerable cold (these are the days you can go out for a walk or sledding) and intolerable cold (these are the days you run from your door to the car, and back again and your nose hairs freeze the second you breathe the frigid air). Because of this, my winters slow down and I begin focusing more on my personal photography, as well as pushing myself to learn as much as I can via online classes and photography groups. Many of you may have noticed that I've been posting more of my personal family images. I've been taking part in a group that is focused on family documentary photography called Stories of Home. It has been such an incredible encouragement to me to see other photographer's inspirational images and to take part in monthly themes, capturing life at home in the daily grind. I'm realizing that there is so much I've been missing over the years because I was afraid of not having the right light. I'm learning to work with the light I have in my house, which is building my skills to share with dear clients.
A few of my favorite family images from December
One of the things I would love to see come out of this time I'm spending working on images in my own home is doing more in-home shoots for clients. I am quickly discovering that this is one of the things that taps into my passions as a photographer and I want to do more of it. I want to come into a client's home and capture life as-is. In the photography world, this is referred to as a "Day in the Life" session.
In late January, I will begin a class focused on the business side of photography. I'm realizing a need to further define what I do and to really spend some time working on a business plan. The class I've signed up for is sought after and highly recommended, so I'm super excited to be a part of that.
Another project I've decided to do this year is a 365. This means that I will be taking a photo every day of 2017 and posting to a Facebook group I am a part of. I know it is going to be a challenge (I'm already feeling it), but I'm so thrilled to be doing this alongside some other photographers. I know that I will capture so many more images of my family this year due to this project, and I believe my skills will grow as a result of pushing myself in this way. I will also be blogging a weekly post with my 7 images, so this will force me to keep my blog updated.
I'm looking forward to a great 2017! <3
