It was planned for the middle of the day on a Wednesday at the little park beside Memorial Bridge in Bismarck. We met up at the location a couple of weeks before the big day and it was so fun to meet them and discuss how the day would unfold. She said, "You just tell me what to do. I trust you!" YES! I can't tell you how nice if feels to hear those words! These two were such a joy to work with and I absolutely loved to watch them laugh together. They had so much fun and the wedding was so low key and simple. Family and friends surrounded them as they vowed their lives to one another and cheered after the kiss. As I drove away, snow began to fall, so they couldn't have timed it better. It was a perfectly beautiful afternoon for a wedding!

Best of 2017 http://lyraleephotography.com/blog/2018/1/2017-family-favorites As I wrapped up my first ever 365 Project at the end of 2017, I gathered my collection of favorites and have begun trying to figure out which ones I'm going to hang in my house. I get so overwhelmed with this task, that I usually give up and just don't do it. However, I'm determined to get these photos on my walls! So, I'll push through this winter and get it done, one way or another.

A few months ago, I was asked to submit something to The Honest Lens Instagram hub about my experience so far with the project. I feel like there is so much I could say about how this project shaped me as a photographer this year, but this is a start. Here is what I said....

This is my first 365 project, and it has definitely been a challenge. However, I am learning as the year passes that this is exactly what my soul needed. I started out the year thinking it would be a great way to document our last year with our eldest son under our roof. What I didn't know was how hard it would be to let him go, and how much of a healing balm photography would become for my aching Mama heart. There are so many challenges faced when making the commitment to take pictures daily. The main challenge is overcoming my feelings. There are many times I just don't feel like picking up the camera. And, I have to give myself  permission to not pick it up sometimes. But, for the most part, I just keep picking it up anyway, and I'm always glad I did. This project has opened my eyes to how deep photography can dig into the depths of who I am. Recently, at a very low point emotionally, I forced myself to grab my camera and go for a walk. I decided to free lens with my Helios (this has been a great creative push for me). It felt as if life was being injected into me. When I began editing images from my walk the next day, I could feel some important lessons taking root in my soul. I was shooting in the midst of weeds, but there was still beauty to be found there. Isn't this life? Things can be so hard at times, but if I just stop and look around for a minute, I will find beauty. It's always there, waiting to be found.

I would just encourage anyone thinking of doing a 365 to take the plunge, as long as you are willing to give yourself grace. I think it can be too burdensome when we put unrealistic expectations on ourselves. We can’t expect to get a perfect shot every single day. It’s freeing to come to a place of accepting that reality. My goal is to get a shot that best tells a story. Sometimes, it’s not the best shot of the day that makes it into my 365. I choose the shot that best encapsulates a part of the day I experienced. All of the other shots are bonus shots, and I have so many more images than I would have had without this project. I need photography more than I ever realized before beginning this 365.

Project 365 | Week Fifty-Two http://lyraleephotography.com/blog/2018/1/project-365-week-fifty-two 358/365

I love the shadow our Christmas tree casts on this wall each morning.

359/365

I can think of no better image to share from Christmas day. She spelled out her Gran-Gran's name unprompted and completely out of the blue. Her namesake is always close to her heart.

360/365

I love that her brother is teaching her how to sew with her new sewing machine. I know nothing about sewing, so Gage saved the day!

361/365

Christmas blur.

362/365

We went to Michael's and bought these adorable lights to string across her bed.

363/365

15 years together! How did time go so fast?

364/365

This print of a Millet painting has brought about great conversations in our home.

365/365

WHOA! I really did it! 365 days complete. I have to admit I was struggling at the end. And, I cheated a little. But, the project is complete. I felt it proper to end this artistic endeavor with a couple of detailed shots from a painting my Aunt Lynda created. I have no doubt that  her creativity influenced me greatly as a child. I always admired her ability to create and will treasure this painting for the rest of my life. It hangs proudly in my dining room and breathes life and beauty into this house daily.

To accomplish making lunch at home on a Sunday afternoon these days feels like a big feat.

345/365

Shadow and light gets me every time.

346/365

Last light of the day, reflected on this old door.

He hates decorating the tree, but I'm just happy to have him here to do it. I added extra lights a few days after this and I asked him if he had noticed. His response.."I've been intentionally not looking at the tree because it's so ugly, so no, I haven't noticed." We are considering splurging on a real tree next year.

Gage is building a heavy duty work table so that he can build a bass guitar. His skills amaze me.

331/365

I'm so thankful for my south facing windows during the winter. Sunlight makes me feel alive.

332/365

Shea has been enjoying his room lately and has turned over a new leaf by cleaning it regularly. I love that he enjoys his own space and that he has made it his own.

335/365

We went to the ND Heritage Center museum and met up with some friends. We need to take advantage of this awesome museum more often. It's just a short walk from our house, which is so nice.

Magic dust makes us happy. We have plenty in this old house.

325/365

She was on her way to an important meeting with leaders in her imaginary land.

327/365

I know I am biased, but this boy! I still can't believe we have an 18 year old son. This was thanksgiving day, and he took over cooking because I was sick. I sat at the bar and gave instructions, and he did a fabulous job.

328/365

I finally got around to playing with the rainbows created by our old lead paned windows. Each sunny afternoon, our walls and floors are dancing with color and I've been wanting to find a subject willing to endure my curiosity. She lasted for a few minutes. ;)

329/365

I went down to the basement to grab a few pictures of my boys building something, but they weren’t there. So, I decided to get creative. We’ve jumped on the Stranger Things bandwagon and my son says this image reminds him of that. We live in a very old house and to me it looks like I’m thinking, “What’s going to go wrong next?”

{Family Session} The Drevecky's http://lyraleephotography.com/blog/2017/11/-family-session-the-dreveckys The wind was insane on the day of our shoot, and I came very close to rescheduling. However, this awesome family was the last on my schedule for the fall, and when checking the weather forecast, there were no better days in the future. The day after our shoot, temps dropped dramatically. So, we decided windy and warm was going to be way better than windy and cold. We made the best of our time together and it all worked out. In 2016 when I did their fall session, the boys were not mobile yet, and this year, they were on the go. I love sessions with young children because you just have to go with it and this is how the best shots happen. We met at a field in south Bismarck. Of course, I came with a loose plan of how to direct our time together, but the reality is that I have to let the kids lead, and that's the way it all works out best. Despite the ridiculous wind, the kids had fun, which is what really matters. Thank you, Drevecky's for trusting me in spite of the wind! You guys are the best!

Project 365 | Week Forty-Six http://lyraleephotography.com/blog/2017/11/project-365-week-forty-six 316/365

I have to admit this a cheat picture. It wasn't really taken on Day 316, but......I LOVE it and had to include it this week.

317/365

Morning light in this room gets me every day the sun is out. She continues to love playing with our nativity set and telling the story of Jesus' birth as she plays. Love it!

318/365

The weather has turned colder around here, but we are still seeing geese in the sky. And, we are trying to get out and enjoy the outdoors before things turn bitterly cold here in North Dakota. Fall is officially over, but winter hasn't hit full force yet.

319/365

We watched the movie Bridge to Terabithia (so good!!!) and it inspired Bryn to use her imagination at our favorite nature trail. We were visiting a magical world this day, and she was such a joy to watch.

320/365

All three of my kids in the frame. I'll take it!!! These three have really been enjoying each other lately, and it warms my heart. I love hearing them laugh together.

321/365

The baby in her arms belonged to her Granny when she was a child and the one on the couch was given to her by Granny. Today, she went over to our beautiful and amazing neighbor's house and picked out an entire wardrobe for her dolls. She is excited to play with them even more now! Thank you, Debbie!!!

322/365

Our friend James came over to play and these two used their imaginations the entire time they were together. The gift of imagination is  a beautiful thing, and I love how kids so freely share that gift, with no worries or inhibitions.

{Family Session} The Ault's http://lyraleephotography.com/blog/2017/11/-family-session-the-aults I had such a great time hanging out with the Ault family for their family session this fall. They are so laid back and always willing to trust me. The weather was perfect and location could not have been better. We explored along the shore of the Missouri River in North Bismarck, played on a playground with an old school merry-go-round, and ended our shoot with an incredible sunset high above the river. Eli was so much fun and kept us laughing!

I'm thinking she looks pretty cute in her Daddy's hat.

310/365

I want to bottle these days up and save them forever.

311/365

My photography journey started with this boy. As a toddler, his eyes caught my camera and drew me in. I've been hooked ever since.

312/365

She loves grammar and I love light and shadows. I may or may not get a little distracted during our school days, but it all works out.

313/365

Around the time we started our school year, I discovered an amazing community of homeschoolers called Wild and Free. I devoured every podcast they had and felt like I had found my people. When I discovered they had this beautiful book, I was all over it. We haven't even dug into it yet, but I can't wait! My kids picked on me and decided I only bought the book because it contains beautiful pictures. They may be on to something.

314/365

Project 365 | Week Forty-Four http://lyraleephotography.com/blog/2017/11/project-365-week-forty-four 302/365

These girls had so much fun going to see The Fiddler on the Roof together. They all three are in 3rd grade this year, and Bryn fully embraces the fact that she is the smallest. :)

303/365

She came downstairs reading Lady of the Lake by Sir Walter Scott. This book was given to us by her Granny, and she's loving it. Poetry is becoming her thing.

304/365

This is the only picture I took with my "big camera" on Halloween. She chose to wear her Ethiopia dress this year, and of course, she couldn't forget the tiara. This is the first year we've been trick our treating in our neighborhood, because our church normally does a trunk or treat. We walked up to the governor's mansion, just down the street from our house, and went to a few other houses along the way. However, it was very cold, and this girl wanted to come home quickly.

305/365

Her ability to fix her hair continues to amaze me. She did this all by herself.

306/365

Cole pup has been in his happy place this week. He doesn't want to come in and stands at the window and door begging for us to come out with him.

307/365

I can't believe we have this, but this is an old measuring stick from my Grandaddy's tool box! His nickname (everyone called him by this) was Huck. Such a treasure! I miss him so much and seeing this brought back a flood of memories. He was such an incredible Grandfather.

308/365

She loves this nativity set. And, I love watching her play with it as she narrates the story of Jesus.

Project 365 | Week Forty-Two http://lyraleephotography.com/blog/2017/10/project-365-week-forty-two Fall is the busiest season for my client sessions, and I have to admit, I've been struggling pushing through with this 365. There are some days here and there lacking a picture, and for this week, most of the images don't truly match up to the day. But, I'm going with it. And, I have images to choose from, so that says something, right? Most of the time, it's the choosing of images that hangs me up, and then I just get behind in organizing because I can't decide. This week, I pushed myself to just do it. The ones that didn't make it into the week, are just extras to be treasured in a family album.

288/365

289/365

I'm so thankful I get to go listen to Gage sing with the BHS concert choir for the rest of this school year. They sang beautifully this week at the Heritage Center and the acoustics were just awesome in the atrium.

290/365

Cutest air guitarist on the planet!

291/365

Leave it to my kids to climb to the top of the zip lines at the pumpkin patch.

292/365

This doesn't happen every day. :)

293/365

These kiddos are so patient with my photography needs. I often take them with me to scout out shoot locations for upcoming client sessions and they just go with it. I'll say, "Just for a minute, can you come stand over here?" And, there you  have it. It's a win-win situation. They get to explore, I get to experiment, and we walk away with a few great photos.

294/365

We love that we are so close to the capital. Lately, we've been enjoying visiting the state library on the capital grounds. They have so many old books I haven't been able to find other places.

{Family Session} The Van Oosterhout's http://lyraleephotography.com/blog/2017/10/-family-session-the-van-oosterhouts It has been such an honor to be the V family's photographer these past three years. The girls have so much personality and are beyond cute. Seriously a photographer's dream! They moved away a couple of years ago, so I count it as a real privilege  to photograph them on visits back to Bismarck to see family. Though it was a little chilly on the day of the shoot, they pushed through, and were as wonderful as ever! See for yourself how awesome this family is. I just love them!

Bryn and I planted a dahlia bulb this spring (a little later than we should have) and we were so excited to finally have a beautiful bloom.

282/365

Macro shots are so soothing to my soul. I have to slow down and really focus in on the tiniest of details.

283/365

Enjoying the last of summer's blooms from our yard. I love her appreciation for the little things. Life is so beautiful through her eyes.

284/365

Cole likes to be right in the middle of whatever we are doing.

285/365

I love this picture because I know the convo that was taking place. Gage was filling out an application for the Coast Guard and Bryn was grilling him on how dangerous it would be. She wanted to know exactly what kind of danger he could run into, and was presenting loads of questions with her typical sass, as evidenced by the hand on her hip.

I would write out the whole story, but it would take a long time. Just know that, well, Gage was being Gage. Life with him is always an adventure. I am happy to have him home because he keeps things exciting around here.

275/365

I finished up a client family session and enjoyed the sunset. How incredible!!!

276/365

Cole looks very interested, right? Hahaha!

277/365

I love her joy. And, I also am in love with the fact that she has labeled her bookshelf. She has a classics section and it is filling up quickly. Most of these have already been read.

278/365

We went to Barnes and Noble to buy a new book. And, within 2 days, she was done.

279/365

Project 365 | Week Thirty-Nine http://lyraleephotography.com/blog/2017/10/project-365-week-thirty-nine I have to admit, my 365 project has been suffering lately. I'm still taking pictures most days, but I have lost my steam. I'm trying to push through and can't believe I've made it this far!

267/365

Gage decided to take this old couch out of the garage and up to his room. But, Cole claimed it before he could even get it inside. Poor Cole puppy. A couple of months ago, we took away his beloved couch and he was so happy to see it once again.

271/365

I decided to try free-lensing with my 50 mm for the first time. Isn't she gorgeous? I know I take plenty of pictures of this girl, but how could I resist?

272/365

Gage turned 18 and I had to make some of Granny's banana muffins.

273/365
